Mariele Neudecker

I have been looking at the work of Mariele Neudecker especially her work “It’s Never Too Late and You Can’t Go Back” which was a proposal for the Forth Plinth in Trafalgar Square.

I think this is a really interesting piece and has given me some inspiration for displaying my own work.

London Mithraeum

I visited the Temple of Mithras in the City of London. It has been reconstructed by Museum of London Archaeology in the basement of the Bloomberg Building designed by Foster and Partners. Light artist Matthew Schrieber has created a way of showing the outline of the original building by shining LED lights on to ultra-fine water spray. I think the results are amazing and I would love to use it but can’t yet think of a way to reconstruct it.

Dhup Incense

dhup

I found some incense from Goa called Dhup. We used this in the house at prayer time, I remember the smell vividly from home and from the times (every 2 weeks or so) when we would visit a small local chapel. The dhup I have is from the church of Our Lady Of Good Health in Velankanni.

I am looking for how I can use this incense to add to the atmosphere I’m trying to create in the model.

Model Crank

I began to make my model in clay (crank) to achieve a texture similar to the outside of the house. My first attempt failed as the walls would have been too thin to support the structure. I worked with the ceramics technician to look at ways to make the model more rigid. I created a model of one corner of the house to scale and it works well as far as the lighting and creating atmosphere goes.

3D model – white foam cardboard

I began by making a rough sketch model from white board. I wanted to start working to the correct scale and make the model quickly but as accurate as possible. It became clear soon that I had made an error in my measurements and the base of the building was not at the correct scale and 2 of the steps leading to the veranda were missing. However the model was not a waste – I filmed some interior shots to help me develop my idea of simulating candlelight. I also have started to think about the materiality of the model – I used white board initially to create an invisible remnant of the original house and to project the video clips onto. I am now moving towards using ceramic/clay to achieve a more accurate model.
