I found some old camcorder footage that I had taken when I was about 10 years old…
I edited the camcorder footage together and made a short film to try and capture the atmosphere of the interior and exterior of the house. The film shows the house at different times of the day and also during a wedding party. I am happy that the contrast between the light and darkness of different spaces within the house and also on the veranda.

The kitchen was basic and thatched with coconut tree leaves by my grandparents. My mother and aunts would cook in there throughout the day, preparing meals for the family. There is electricity in this part of the house so it was lit by candles.
I can clearly remember my family gathering around the big table in the middle to eat.
Breakfast – 5:30am to 9:00am.
As I watched the camcorder footage I caught a fleeting glimpse of my grandparent’s chair – I remember how they used to reprint these every year to protect them.

This is my grandparent house – plan, elevation and section (no scale) all drawn from memory. I found this a challenge as my recollection of the interior is hazy, for example, the the positioning of the kitchen door does feel right but I can’t think how else it would work. Likewise the layout of the bedroom furniture is something I’m struggling to recall.
